A while back, I ran into a friend on the street. Let’s call him James. Immediately, I knew something was wrong.

James looked visibly depressed. A dark, heavy cloud of energy hovered over him, but his face brightened when he saw me.

“Of course I’m running into you right now!” he said, “I could really use your help.”

James told me that he’d fallen in love one year prior and that he’d never felt more comfortable with another human being. In fact, he’d already begun to envision spending the rest of his life with this man.

As he continued to share his story with me, his eyes filled with tears.

“A few weeks ago, my boyfriend just got up and left. I’ve been in a dark hole ever since. I don’t know what to do. Do you have any advice?”

I can empathize with those first weeks or months of initial shock, panic, anger, and heartache that accompany this, or any, traumatic event.

“I know you may not want to hear this, ” I said, “because you’re hoping for a quick fix to alleviate your intense pain, but trust me…”

“Time will help you heal.”

James and I spoke in-depth for a while longer and by the end of our conversation his spirit had lifted.

Time will loosen the knots. Click To Tweet

One of my favorite lines by Shakespeare is: “O Time, thou must untangle this, not I. ’Tis too hard a knot for me t’untie.”

“Time will loosen the knots” can be wonderfully helpful advice depending on where you are in your life.

Once you understand the following spiritual steps, you can use your inner wisdom to feel out when and how to apply them to your particular problem.

Step 1: Allow time to loosen the knots of your painful situation.

I gave my friend James this simple advice because he was experiencing the acute after-effects of his traumatic breakup. He needed to allow his intense feelings to pass through him without resisting them or trying to fix them — not just yet.

No matter what you’re going through right now, you have to give yourself time to feel your true feelings, otherwise you may miss the important lessons that your pain has come to teach you.

A Course In Miracles says that all things are lessons the Universe wants you to learn. Sometimes, bad-feeling emotions help you recognize the importance of the lesson — otherwise you might never learn it!

If we don’t fully experience the pain of a breakup, or a job loss, or an addiction, or financial instability, we are likely to miss the opportunity to grow into the life we were born to live. After all, how can you change something, like a pattern of behavior, if you don’t feel a pressing need to do so?

Time does help heal your wounds by loosening the tight knots of your problems so that you can begin to untie them.

As enough time passes and the hyper-intense feelings weaken juuuuust a little bit (often going from full-blown panic to chronic discomfort), that’s when you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2: Take responsibility for your life by following your inner wisdom.

Recently, James called me to ask, “I feel like there’s enough space between me and the breakup, but I’m still feeling stuck. What do I do now?”

I said, “You’re ready for the next step!”

Once you’ve allowed time to “soften the blow” and create some space between you and your problem, you can begin to take wise, practical action to move beyond it.

The important, empowering lesson here is this:

Time alone does not always heal your wounds — but with the help of trusted companions, a strong connection to your Higher Power, and practical action — you will heal.

The brilliant wordsmith and astrologer Rob Brezsny wrote:

Time does not necessarily heal all wounds. If you wait around passively, hoping that the mere passage of months will magically fix your twists and smooth out your tweaks, you’re shirking your responsibility.

The truth is, you need to be fully engaged in the process. You’ve got to feel deeply and think hard about how to diminish your pain, and then take practical action when your wisdom shows you what will actually work.

Here are some of my favorite tips and practices to help you upgrade your commitment to your own sacred quest:

1. Tune into your inner guidance.

Use your journal to answer this question: “What is life trying to tell me?”

If everything that happens to you is a lesson that the Universe wants you to learn, what are the lessons you’re learning from your life experiences right now?

Writing down your responses in your own handwriting will help your Higher Self to come forward with clarity and helpful guidance.

2. Give your body a biochemical message of safety.

When you unconsciously choose to live in a constant state of anxiety and fear, you activate your body’s fight-or-flight mechanism. This not only makes you vulnerable to physical disease, but also shuts you off from your intuition.

You can choose to send your entire mind-body system a biochemical message of safety by listening to a guided meditation for just a few minutes.

Listen to this guided meditation whenever you want to send your body a clear message: “It is safe to relax. It is safe to let go of my fear. It is safe to feel abundant and powerful.”

3. Appreciate what’s working!

Many years ago, I was living in a small studio apartment in the East Village of New York City. I wanted so badly to be living in a nicer apartment. I spent so much time dreaming of a “better” apartment and praying for the money to be able to get one that I actually made my apartment much worse!

I didn’t clean it properly, so it felt messy. I didn’t try to beautify the space or make it feel like a home, so the living space didn’t “love” me back.

It felt — in a word — depressing.

When I started appreciating my apartment by cleaning, organizing, and creating a sacred space, the vibes totally changed. Finally, I felt like I was where I was supposed to be at that moment in time. I felt supported by my living situation and inspired to create something wonderful to share with the world.

That small studio apartment became a launching pad for the work and life I have now.

Often we block our own blessings by saying “no thank you” to what we’ve been given. And what happens when you repeatedly say “no thank you” to someone giving you gifts?

You don’t get any more gifts!

4. Move the energy around — gently, gently, gently.

You don’t have to fix your whole life in one single day. Don’t even try because it’s not possible and will only leave you feeling frustrated and powerless.

Instead, try making small moves toward your goal.

For example, if you feel guided to change your living situation or your job, start by opening up a few tabs in your web browser and looking at the apartments/jobs available right now in different areas/fields.

You don’t have to make any decisions yet! Just explore. Do something small that will stretch you out of your comfort zone and get the energy moving again around a stagnant area of your life.

The more you move the energy around, the more information you’ll have and the clearer your inner guidance will be.

5. Ask for help.

The fact of the matter is this: your life is going to be challenging at times. You can’t do it alone and — thank God — you don’t have to! You’re on this planet to feel what it’s like to be supported.

We need relationships to heal. We need to feel helpful and useful in order to feel fulfilled. We also need to allow ourselves to be helped if we want to live a fuller life.

You can seek help from a professional — a relationship expert, career counselor, accountant, healer, therapist, or life coach.

You can reach out to a willing friend or trusted elder and share your problem with them.

You can always, always, always reach out to your Higher Power in a moment of surrendered prayer and simply say:

“Please help. I need help. I’m willing to let this go. I’m willing to forgive myself. I’m willing change my habits. Show me where I should go. Show me what I should do.”

Remember, the Universe hears every prayer and guidance comes in many forms. Be willing to hear it — and then start taking action on it (even if that just means moving the energy around a bit).

No matter what difficulty you’re going through, it won’t always be like this. Click To Tweet

Time will loosen your knots enough so that you can at last untie them — with a little help from others and a lot of help from Above.

Sending you love wherever you are in the world,
