In this super smart conversation about gay spirituality, research scientist, writer, and life coach Gilles Herrada says modern gays are “symbolically empty” and missing a shared cultural story that gives our lives meaning. The time is now, he says, to create a new one.

In his new book The Missing Myth: A New Vision of Same-Sex Love, Herrada writes:

Without a positive representation in the mythos to consolidate its sociocultural existence, homosexuality remains completely vulnerable to a resurgence of homophobia and scapegoating … Modern homosexuality has no meaning other than its biomedical definition. Thus homosexuality today is still symbolically empty, still absent from the mythos, and still disconnected from the sacred. As a matter of fact, modern homosexuals live today with nearly the same mythic context as the sodomites of the Middle Ages. From a psychocultural viewpoint, this is not just uncomfortable; this is torture.

As human beings, we are meaning-seeking creatures. We need stories to survive. Herrada says that while modern homosexuality exists in body and mind, it has no soul. Now is the time to look into our history, look into our science, look into our sacred texts—and find a story that gives our lives meaning.

I hope you find some nuggets of wisdom in this conversation.
